Move Over Miami Dolphins: These Jays Were Perfect

Posted on May 26, 2009

In 1972, the NFL Miami Dolphins posted a perfect season at 17-0.  But all Perfects aren’t the same.

The Oberata Blue Jays finished an immaculate 0-0-12 season last Thursday, celebrating the most spotless performance ever seen by any sports organization of any kind.  Statisticians marveled at the Jays’ numbers:

The Numbers

Another noteworthy accomplishment was a supernatural transformation for Coach Tom Chilicki.  ”Coach T”, historically a fire breathing, brawling manager feared by umpires everywhere, had an incredibly tame season with zero ejections.

“That’s like Old Faithful not spouting,” offered wife Laurie.  ”I don’t know how he kept his cool all year, but he did it.”

When questioned why no umpires dared set foot on the field for any Blue Jay games this season, KFCBA spokespeople declined to comment.

The successful redirection of Coach T’s “determination” must have been aimed at those hardworking tee-ballers.  With each play, Coach T could be heard shouting,  ”WAKE UP CONNOR!  TOMMY!  GET UP!  CHRISTIAN!  GET UP!  JACK E!  GET BACK TO THIRD BASE!  JACK!  TYLER!  THROW THE BALL TO FIRST!  TYLER!  GUTHRIE, GET ON THE BASE!  GUTHRIE! CATCH THE BALL!” and so on.

This high-touch technique, combined with dogged perseverance, brought the team to a supreme level of performance.  Blue Jay players were seen catching, throwing, running, hitting, and having a total blast.

“Fun and learning are a great combination,” suggested proud team sponsor Jeff Timpanaro.  ”All these kids are primed and ready for the next level, and it’s all due to the dedication of the players and staff.  I couldn’t be prouder of these guys!”

Post Script:  A special thanks to all of you readers out there!  I enjoyed writing about this experience and certainly learned more about life, kids, and the special place “organized sports” have in our development.

The real kudos go to the parents. Maybe we go too far sometimes to keep our kids “busy & social” but the spirit of fun in these games was great.

Thanks to everyone who put in the effort, especially the coaches and team mom Denise Foster.
